Potato sack pose - video edit

Updated: Aug 7, 2022

My latest newborn safety post got me thinking about something. A lot of bad photographers film themselves working, not necessarily to teach but for behind the scenes stuff. It’s terrifying that many of them do teach their unsafe methods.

We can always see the wrong way to do things, but what about something like this showing the right way? Like the potato sack pose.

I don’t call myself a mentor, I don’t teach courses. I do try to educate whenever and however I can. Behind the scenes video of live sessions will show you how I handle babies and work with parents to achieve more complex poses.

I do plan to eventually offer professional video as an add on for clients once we get past this pandemic. What would you think about just behind the scenes video to show you how I work with babies?

I don’t usually have a before and after live shots to go with my posts about safety because I’m too busy creating the image the right way. Here is a before and after edit of the potato sack pose showing someone is holding baby’s head, he is not just sitting there on his own.

Video of the steps happening may be helpful to watch how the poses are properly performed during the session and just to show how things go down in my studio.

This is just one of many poses that in my opinion should never be done without an assistant, or parent.

Prop poses without hands directly on should still have someone next to baby with a hand just inches away.

You also need to be able to communicate with the person assisting and make sure they know what you need and when.

How to hold, when to hold, when you’re going to take the shot and when they need to move in. Don’t be jumpy or take a sharp breath, just be calm and watching every possible move.

I always go into sessions intending on taking some short clips during but I always forget since I’m in the zone but maybe having another camera set up on a tripod will encourage me to do the thing I always intend to do 😂.
